Today, I would like to share with you a biblical and pastoral perspective on the type of bread used in the Lord\u2019s Supper. Some of our members, having been part of Messianic Jewish communities, may feel that using unleavened bread is more biblically appropriate. This is a sincere question that comes from a reverent heart, and it is indeed a valuable concern.<\/p>\n
1. The Bread Jesus Used in Scripture<\/p>\n
When Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples, it was during the Passover season (Matt. 26:17\u201319). Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt, and traditionally, the Israelites ate unleavened bread (matzah) during this time (Exod. 12:15). Therefore, it is highly likely that the bread Jesus broke was unleavened.<\/p>\n
From this biblical background, using unleavened bread in the Lord\u2019s Supper can be seen as a reverent practice that honors the scriptural tradition.<\/p>\n
2. The Essence of the Lord\u2019s Supper Is Its Symbolism<\/p>\n
However, the question of whether the bread must be unleavened should be considered in light of the symbolic essence of the Lord\u2019s Supper.<\/p>\n
The bread Jesus gave symbolized His body. He told His disciples, \u201cThis is my body, given for you,\u201d explaining its representative meaning (Luke 22:19). The focus of the Lord\u2019s Supper is not on the ingredients or form of the bread, but rather on the faithful confession that it symbolizes the body of Christ.<\/p>\n
Today, many churches in Korea use regular leavened bread and often use grape juice instead of wine. This practice follows the same principle: the essence of the cup is not its alcohol content, but its symbolic representation of the blood of Christ.<\/p>\n
3. The Symbolism of Leaven and a Balanced Application<\/p>\n
In the Bible, leaven is sometimes used as a symbol of sin (1 Cor. 5:6\u20138), and thus unleavened bread can represent purity and holiness. However, this symbolism should not be legalistically applied as a strict requirement for the bread used in the Lord\u2019s Supper.<\/p>\n
The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 11, emphasizes the heart and attitude with which we partake in the Supper, rather than the physical qualities of the bread. The Lord\u2019s Supper is a time to remember Christ\u2019s death, to affirm our unity as His body, and to confess our faith together.<\/p>\n
4. Conclusion: Meaning Is More Important Than Form<\/p>\n
In conclusion, whether the bread is leavened or unleavened, what matters is that it is received in faith as a symbol of the body of Christ. The tradition of using unleavened bread is honorable and may be continued with respect, but it is not the only valid method. What is most important is that we remember Christ\u2019s body and blood, and that we partake with gratitude and faith.<\/p>\n

Some of our members, having been part of Messianic Jewish communities, may feel that using unleavened bread is more biblically appropriate. This is a sincere question that comes from a reverent heart, and it is indeed a valuable concern. 1. The Bread Jesus Used in Scripture When Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples, it was during the Passover season (Matt. 26:17\u201319). Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt, and traditionally, the Israelites ate unleavened bread (matzah) during this time (Exod. 12:15). Therefore, it is highly likely that the bread Jesus broke was unleavened. From this biblical background, using unleavened bread in the Lord\u2019s Supper can be seen as a reverent practice that honors the scriptural tradition. 2. The Essence of the Lord\u2019s Supper Is Its Symbolism However, the question of whether the bread must be unleavened should be considered in light of the symbolic essence of the Lord\u2019s Supper. The bread Jesus gave symbolized His body. He told His disciples, \u201cThis is my body, given for you,\u201d explaining its representative meaning (Luke 22:19). The focus of the Lord\u2019s Supper is not on the ingredients or form of the bread, but rather on the faithful confession that it symbolizes the body of Christ. Today, many churches in Korea use regular leavened bread and often use grape juice instead of wine. This practice follows the same principle: the essence of the cup is not its alcohol content, but its symbolic representation of the blood of Christ. 3. The Symbolism of Leaven and a Balanced Application In the Bible, leaven is sometimes used as a symbol of sin (1 Cor. 5:6\u20138), and thus unleavened bread can represent purity and holiness. However, this symbolism should not be legalistically applied as a strict requirement for the bread used in the Lord\u2019s Supper. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 11, emphasizes the heart and attitude with which we partake in the Supper, rather than the physical qualities of the bread. The Lord\u2019s Supper is a time to remember Christ\u2019s death, to affirm our unity as His body, and to confess our faith together. 4. Conclusion: Meaning Is More Important Than Form In conclusion, whether the bread is leavened or unleavened, what matters is that it is received in faith as a symbol of the body of Christ. The tradition of using unleavened bread is honorable and may be continued with respect, but it is not the only valid method. What is most important is that we remember Christ\u2019s body and blood, and that we partake with gratitude and faith.
